Tropical Storm ‘Mario’ continues to bring rains

MANILA, Philippines–Tropical Storm “Mario” continued to head toward northern Luzon late Thursday night, maintaining its strength of 65 kilometers per hour and gusts of 80 kph, and bringing rains, the weather bureau said.

In its latest bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that Mario was treading a west northwest path at a pace of 26 kph.

Pagasa spotted Mario at 436 kilometers east of Baler, Aurora, as of 10 p.m. Thursday.

Pagasa hoisted Public Storm Warning Signal No. 2 over Cagayan including Calayan and Babuyan groups of islands, Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra and Ilocos Norte as of 10 p.m.

Under Public Storm Warning Signal No. 1 are Catanduanes, Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao, Benguet, Mountain Province, Ilocos Sur, La Union and the Batanes group of islands.

Mario, coupled with the southwest monsoon, will bring moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms to the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas and Central Visayas, Pagasa said, warning against possible flashfloods and landslides.
