MANILA, Philippines – Instead of answering “point for point” the allegations of corruption that were levelled against him, Vice President Jejomar Binay chose to do “early campaigning” in a speech he delivered Thursday.

Lawyer Renato Bondal, a key witness against the multi-billion Makati Building 2, told a press briefing on the same day that Binay did not answer the allegations thrown against him and his family.

“Sinabi niya na sasagutin niya punto por punto ang mga alegasyon sa kanya pero wala naman siyang nabanggit about the overpriced Makati building,” Bondal said.

(He said that he would answer point by point the allegations against him but didn’t say anything about the overpriced Makati building.)

In his speech, Binay claimed that bidding regulations were followed in the construction of the controversial Makati building. Bondal insisted that no bidding happened as corroborated by Engineer Mario Hechanova, former Makati city general services head.

“Saan kumukuha ng tapang si Binay na sinasabing kasinungalingan ang mga allegasyon laban sa kanya,” he said.

(Where does Binay get the strength to lie about the allegations against him?)

Instead of offering an explanation, Bondal said, Binay wasted his time doing early campaigning.

On Thursday afternoon, Binay delivered a speech that would have countered all the corruption allegations hurled against him and his family about the overpriced Makati City Hall Building II and other city projects.
