MANILA, Philippines – Militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) on Sunday blasts President Benigno Aquino III and his allies for the “politically motivated” Senate investigations launched to look into the allegedly overpriced Makati City Hall Building II.

“It is clearly hypocritical for President Aquino to unleash his attack dogs against VP Binay and other leaders of the opposition, while shielding himself and his allies from similar demands and mechanisms for accountability,” Bayan chairperson  Dr. Carol Araullo said in a statement.

Araullo blasted the Senate for holding only one hearing for the P144-billion Disbursement Acceleration Program yet has able to hold three inquiries on the P2.7-billion Makati City Hall Building II.

However, the militant group clarified that Vice President Jejomar Binay needs to explain his side.

“He nonetheless owes it to the people to fully respond to the grave charges hurled against him on his central role in what is being exposed as the systemic plunder of the coffers of Makati City,” Araullo added.

Bayan also denied that the Senate investigation is “an honest and thoroughgoing effort to clean up government,” saying that if Binay wins the presidency, the corruption charges against him and his family will be shelved.

The Senate Blue Ribbon sub-committee will resume its probe on the alleged overpriced building on September 11.
