MANILA, Philippines—Senate President Franklin Drilon took the ice bucket challenge on Monday morning.
Drilon was just among the growing number of politicians like fellow senators Sonny Angara and Bam Aquino who have accepted the challenge of having buckets of ice and ice-cold water dumped onto them to raise awareness on the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
He was nominated by Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas. In Turn, Drilon tagged Gawad Kalinga founder Antonio “Tony” Meloto, ABS-CBN Foundation managing director Gina Lopez, and Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce President Alfonso Sy.
According to the ALS Association in America, ALS “is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to (the patient’s) death.”
