MRT-LRT remain closed

MANILA, Philippines – The Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and the Light Rail Transit (LRT) remain closed on Wednesday afternoon after strong winds brought about by typhoon “Glenda” toppled power lines in the country.

“Operations ng LRT/MRT suspended pa rin dahil po sa kawalan ng sapat at maayos na power supply,” Hernando Cabrera, LRT Administration (LRTA) spokesperson, said over Twitter.

Cabrera at around 4:30 am on Wednesday announced that commercial operations of the LRT 2 and the MRT 3 will start, but on a later schedule because of debris found on the tracks.

However, as strong winds and heavy rains pummelled Metro Manila and nearby provinces, power lines were toppled and electricity went out.

At around 6 am he said only a limited number of trains of the said lines were operating. However, he said LRT 1 could not operate because of limited and fluctuating power supply.

Thirty minutes later, he said all trains were halted and operations of LRT and MRT were suspended as the typhoon approached Cavite and later Metro Manila.
