MANILA, Philippines—While detained Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla have been under fire for being picky when it comes to their jail food, Senator Juan Ponce Enrile had no problems eating his meal rations.

According to a police official, Enrile, who is currently under the custody of the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital, said the senator ate his food ration this Tuesday morning.

Chief Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac, PNP Public Information Office chief, said in a press briefing that the 90-year-old senator had pandesal (salt bread), kesong puti (white cheese) and two boiled eggs for breakfast.

“This morning he did his routine morning exercises, ate his breakfast that was served to him in the hospital with fair appetite,” Sindac said.

He also noted that Enrile himself claimed he had “a restful and sufficient sleep.”

But when asked in a separate media briefing if Estrada and Revilla have finally eaten their food rations, Sindac replied with “hindi pa rin (not yet).”

It was earlier reported that the two senators jailed at a detention bungalow at the PNP Custodial Center would constantly refuse to eat their prison food.

Sindac said their rations were always left untouched because relatives of Estrada and Revilla sent them ample food.

A police official who requested anonymity for lack of authority to speak on the matter told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that the jailbird lawmakers should “understand that the PNP is using public funds for the food ration of detainees like (them).”

But the PNP PIO chief said even if the senators do not eat their rationed food, they should return them so they can be distributed to their fellow inmates at the Custodial Center.
