MANILA, Philippines – Police doctors have recommended Senator Juan Ponce Enrile to undergo a medical test of his heart on Tuesday morning, a police official said.
When Enrile surrendered last Friday, his blood pressure shot up to 200/90.
Chief Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac, Philippine National Police Public Information Office (PNP PIO) chief, said in a press briefing on Monday that Enrile would have to undergo a two-dimensional echodcardiogram (2D Echo) with doppler at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
The 2D Echo procedure is performed to evaluate one’s heart condition using ultrasound waves.
The police, however, said Enrile would not leave the PNP General Hospital (PNP GH) since the test would be given inside the Camp Crame hospital.
On Monday morning, Sindac said Enrile’s blood pressure went down to 140/70 with a pulse rate of 63 beats per minute.
This indicated that the 90-year-old senator was faring well compared to his condition last Friday with a relatively high blood pressure and a pulse rate of 84 beats per minute.
In one of his motions submitted to the court, Enrile said he has the following illnesses: Diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, chronic hypertension, extensive coronary artery calcification in the right coronary, age-related macular degeneration, elevated blood fasting sugar, mild anemia, and eight other diseases.
The senator is also under 22 maintenance medicines for his illnesses: 21 tablets and an injection.
While waiting for the Sandiganbayan Third Division to issue his commitment order, Enrile was held at the PNP GH.
The anti-graft has yet to decide where he should be detained.
