MANILA, Philippines—Senator Juan Ponce Enrile on Saturday thanked the Philippine National Police (PNP) for their kind treatment to him after he surrendered to police authorities on Friday.
Enrile in a televised interview after his eye check-up in Makati said the police treated him kindly on his first night in detention at the PNP General Hospital in Camp Crame.
The 90-year-old senator also expressed his gratitude to the PNP for allowing him to undergo eye treatment at a private hospital in Makati City.
His camp said that Enrile has “macular degeneration” and might lead to blindness if not treated.
The PNP refused to release Enrile’s mugshots and said Saturday it would not issue any updates on the detained politician.
A radio report, meanwhile, said Enrile’s blood pressure on Saturday morning was 172/82 from the 200/90 he had during his medical examination after he surrendered to the PNP Friday.
Enrile is currently under temporary hospital arrest due to his medical condition.
His arrest warrant would be returned at the Sandiganbayan on Monday where the anti-graft court would issue a commitment order on the senator’s detention.
