UMINGAN, Pangasinan, Philippines — A farmer died on Tuesday after he was hit by lightning on a rice field here, police said.

Chief Inspector Remegio Yapes, the town’s police chief, said the victim, Renato Cajilo, 21, was struck by lightning as he was walking from his farm to his house in Barangay (village) Abot-Molina during a thunderstorm about 5 p.m.

Children who passed through the rice field saw Cajilo sprawled and unconscious, Yapes said.

“He had a severe burn in the part of his abdomen where his mobile phone was tucked in,” he said.

He said Cajilo died while being taken to the Umingan Community Hospital.
