Soldier wounded in Bukidnon clash

MANILA, Philippines — An Army soldier was wounded in a clash with communist rebels in Bukidnon early Tuesday, the military said.

Residents of Sitio (sub-village) Kalanganan in San Vicente town reported extortion activities of the New People’s Army which prompted the military to launch operations at about 5 a.m., said Captain Alberto Caber of the Eastern Mindanao Command

There was a 20-minute firefight and the soldiers were able to recover an M16 rifle and .45 pistol.

Eastern Mindanao Command chief Lieutenant General Rainier Cruz ordered the military to continue its operations against the communist rebels.

The soldier, with a rank of Private First Class, is now in good condition.
