Today, March 24, is the 44th death anniversary of writer, labor leader and National Artist for Literature Amado V. Hernandez. Born on Sept. 13, 1903, he grew up in Tondo, Manila. Hernandez worked as a journalist for several publications and received the Republic Cultural Heritage Award and a number of Palancas for his literary works. Among his masterpieces were “Mga Ibong Mandaragit,” “Isang Dipang Langit” and “Luha ng Buwaya.” He died in 1970 and was posthumously honored as National Artist for Literature in 1973.  Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
