Thief nabbed after rob try on cab driver in San Juan City

MANILA, Philippines—A taxi driver was rushed to the hospital after he was stabbed by a 25-year-old man who wanted to rob him in San Juan City on Monday.

Senior Supt. Joselito Daniel, San Juan chief of police, said Rolando Bundad Muyco, 43, was treated for injuries in his right arm. His attacker, on the other hand, Mark Tibar Carandang, was arrested by patrolling barangay (village) watchmen who chanced upon the pair as they were struggling inside the victim’s taxi cab around 12:30 a.m.

Muyco told the police that Carandang hailed him on Barangka Drive in Mandaluyong City and asked that he be taken to F. Manalo Street. But when they got to M. Salvador Street in Barangay Batis, Carandang suddenly took out an icepick and stabbed him.

Muyco said he tried to fight off Carandang and their struggle caught the attention of residents and a group of barangay watchmen in the area. They subdued Carandang who yielded an eight-inch-long icepick and took him to a nearby police headquarters as others took the taxi driver to the hospital.

The police said charges of frustrated robbery with physical injuries would be filed against Carandang.—Kristine Felisse Mangunay
