UP, Ateneo change school calendar

MANILA, Philippines—The University of the Philippines (UP) system and the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) have decided to move their school opening in August instead of June.

A report from the Philippine Collegian, UP Diliman’s official student publication, said the transition which will take effect this year in all UP campuses except for UP Diliman, has been approved by the Board of Regents.

UP student regent Krista Melgajero was quoted as saying the flagship campus UP Diliman will keep the same school opening “due to opposition registered by sectors.”

Ateneo, meanwhile, said in a statement that the new school calendar would take effect in 2015-2016 calendar year.

“Ateneo needs to ensure that our graduates develop a global outlook and global competencies so that they can navigate a more complex, interconnected world and contribute towards resolving global concerns,” said ADMU President Jose Ramon Villarin.

Villarin added that the shift will allow the university to be in sync with 80 percent of its educational partners abroad and will facilitate more collaboration between Ateneo and foreign educational institutions.

Villarin said the university has already informed the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) noting the shift would be a great challenge but said they are confident to be ready by 2015.
