The Manila Police District on Thursday formally received P18 million from City Hall, which Mayor Joseph Estrada said would restore the MPD members’ monthly allowance that was suspended by his predecessor, Alfredo Lim, two years ago.
The release would translate to P6,000—at P1,000 per month since Estrada took over in June—for each of the MPDs 3,000 members.
The mayor and former president described the amount as a form of “financial assistance” drawn from his discretionary fund.
Estrada noted that Lim suspended the release of the police allowance two years ago. “So I told Vice Mayor Isko Moreno and the city council to pass an ordinance granting financial assistance to ensure that the MPD will receive allowance on a regular basis even after my term,” he said.—Erika Sauler
