BIR slaps tax evasion case against Malampaya contractor

MANILA, Philippines – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Thursday filed a tax evasion complaint against one of the contractors of the Malampaya Fund Infrastructure Project.

BIR chief Kim Henares said Bella Tiotangco of BCT Trading and Construction only declared P167.77 million income for 2008.

However, investigation showed that documents from checks, disbursement vouchers, and documents from Provincial Government of Palawan showed P330.36 million in earnings. She also received P52.95 million for completing the construction of various infrastructures in the Port of El Nido, Palawan.

The BIR, in its complaint, said Tiotangco under-declared her income by P233.71 million or by 139 percent. She also under-declared her value added tax for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters of 2008 by P71.55 million, P123.66 million and P123.11 million, respectively.

Tiotangco’s tax liability is at P277.21 million.
