ILOILO CITY—Police have filed charges against 19 suspects, including 17 inmates, allegedly involved in last Friday’s violence inside the district jail in San Jose, Antique which led to the death of a jail guard.
The Antique Police filed charges of murder and illegal possession of firearms against the suspects before the Antique Provincial Prosecutors Office on Wednesday for the killing of jail guard Romar Saquibal.
Saquibal died of a gunshot wound after he was overpowered and disarmed by the jail inmates.
The killing triggered a six-hour standoff until the inmates were convinced to surrender by their lawyers and other negotiators.
Among those charged were inmates Lloyd Francisco, Christopher Fernando and Evelio Molina who were identified as among the leaders of the inmates who participated in the killing and standoff.
The police also charged Joey Naldo and an unidentified suspect who allegedly threw a .38 caliber handgun and a grenade over the wall of the prison facility which the inmates used.
The APPO said Joey Naldo is the younger brother of Jerry Naldo, one of the inmates charged with the killing of the jail guard.
Fourteen of the accused inmates were detained at the Antique Rehabilitation Center while Francisco, Fernando and Molina remained at the San Jose police station.
