MANILA, Philippines—Fighting the monsters of corruption, various artists will parade Wednesday in their halloween costumes to once again call for the abolition of the pork barrel allocation.
Dubbed as “KataKURATOTan,” anti-pork protesters from different groups under the Abolishpork Movement and artists from Artista Kontra Kurapsyon (AKKSYON) will converge along Roxas Boulevard to march to the Senate dressed in Filipino folklore monster costumes.
In a statement by AKKSYON, Neil Doloricon, one of the convenors of the art community, said that the issue of corruption was “quite real and causing havoc and carnage” on the people’s lives.
The former University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts dean said that pork barrel was “politically dead, yet it continues” to thrive under the administration of President Benigno Aquino III.
“Lawmakers are trying to keep it alive in the national budget and the President refuses to give up his own pork. In the horror genre, it would be similar to the undead,” Doloricon added.
On Tuesday, the House of Representatives approved the P2.268-trillion 2014 national budget, eliminating the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), official name of pork barrel, lump sum appropriation in it.
Meanwhile on November 7, the center of the billions-worth pork barrel scam Janet Lim-Napoles will face the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee as it resumes the probe into the misuse of public funds.
The groups will again gather in front of the Senate on the November hearing.
