MANILA, Philippines—The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will hold another special meeting on Monday to decide if the Oct. 28 barangay (village) elections would push through in Bohol, which was struck by a powerful earthquake last week.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr., who returned on Sunday from a weekend trip to Bohol where he conducted an ocular inspection of quake-hit areas, will give his assessment of the situation to the other commissioners.
Last Friday, Brillantes said they had agreed to follow the same procedure when they decided to postpone the barangay polls in Zamboanga City following the three-week violent standoff between government forces and followers of Moro National Liberation Front chair Nur Misuari.
One of the factors considered by the Comelec in suspending the elections in the southwestern Mindanao city is the condition of schools.—Jerry E. Esplanada
