Cebu City virtually retains overall title
Team Cebu City flashed relentless form in harvesting 29 gold medals yesterday to virtually retain the overall crown of the 2013 Batang Pinoy-Visayas Qualifying Leg in Maasin, Southern Leyte.
Friday’s massive harvest upped the Niños running tally to 75 gold medals with the defending champion’s karatedo and swimming teams contributing nine and 11 gilts, respectively, yesterday.
Cebu City’s athletics team meanwhile, added three more gold medals to finish its campaign with 10 golds. The Niños’ Sepak Takraw squad harvested two golds while its taekwondo jins closed their stint with five gold medals.
The Karatedo Team harvested a total of 24 gold medals while the swimming team earned 26 first place finishes in the weeklong multi-sport meet which will end today.
Cebu City’s chessers chipped in four gold medals while its weightlifting team bagged four.
Vic Glyzen Derotas emerged the best wood pusher in the girls blitz event while James Andrew Balbona topped the boys blitz contest. Christian Pondoyo swept the boys standard and rapid golds.

BOXERS SHINE
Cebu City’s boxing team is also expected to contribute to the city’s harvest with six Niños gunning for golds today, revealed head coach and trainer Jordan Dopalco.
Niños fighting for golds today are: Jeffrey Jimenez vs. Jay Forzado of Maasin City (kiddie weight division); John Paul Gabunelas vs. Mandaue City’s John Niño Vega; Marvin Pumar vs. Joshua Orello of Maasin City (mosquito weight); Hergie Gimeda vs. Maasin City’s Romie Evale (light paperweight); Richard Rama vs. Ronel Corales of Consolacion, Cebu (light pinweight) and John Lloyd Pasaporte vs. Carl Cortes of Mandaue City (52kg division).
The Niños are also gunning for golds in softball, table tennis, arnis, lawn tennis and dancesport which will all be held today.
