Grim weather grounds 200 flights

MANILA, Philippines – The Manila International Airport Authority said at least 197 flights were canceled on Monday and Tuesday as the southwest monsoon and tropical storm “Maring” triggered torrential rains and widespread flooding in Luzon.

A report by Radyo Inquirer 990AM said the Ninoy Aquino International Airport media affairs office announced that 72 flights, 40 international and 32 domestic, were canceled in Terminal 2 where Philippine Airlines is based.

Meanwhile, 75 Cebu Pacific and 32 PAL Express flights under Terminal 3 have been canceled.

At Terminal 4, Air Asia canceled 18 flights.

Earlier, INQUIRER.net reported that as of 7:30 a.m., 12 Manila-bound flights and 1 return flight to Kuala Lumpur have been canceled based on the Department of Transportation and Communication’s (@DOTCPhilippines) announcement on Twitter.

At 11:13 a.m., the DOTC announced that 2P-084 MNL-Basco and 2P-085 Basco-MNL have also been canceled because of bad weather in Batanes.

The radio report said that as of Wednesday morning, all roads going to NAIA were flood-free.

Because of the storm-enhanced monsoon rains, Cebu Pacific and PAL announced the waiving of rebooking fees for storm-affected passengers with August 19 to 21 flights.
