History confab set Aug. 27-29
The 22nd annual conference of the Manila Studies Association Inc. (MSA) will be held on Aug. 27-29 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex Auditorium of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila.
The conference, cosponsored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ (NCCA) Committee on Historical Research, the UST Department of History and the National Historical Commission, will be held in commemoration of Andres Bonifacio’s 150th birth anniversary this year. In celebration of History Month in August, there will be an exhibit, “Manila at the Turn of the 20th Century,” at the Gallery of the NCCA in Intramuros, Manila.
Papers will be presented on studies highlighting various aspects of Manila’s history and culture, as well as studies on national history. These are:
“Katipunan Revolution in Manila” by Gil Gotiangco Jr.; “Linking the Philippines and the World: Archaeology and Prehistory of the Philippine Islands,” Mary Jane Louise A. Bolunia; “In Search of a Pottery Chronology in Prehistoric Philippines: A Discussion of Issues and Current Practices in the Analysis of Prehistoric Earthenware Assemblages in the Country,” Eliza Romualdez-Valtos; “Tiples: Soldier Orphaned Sons in Manila’s Manila Cathedral and Royal Chapel,” Romeo B. Galang Jr.;
“Institutional Action Against Chinese Traders in Spanish Philippines,” Tina S. Clemente; “Replanning Post-British Occupied Manila,” Lorelei D.C. de Viana; “Reviving a Vanishing Tidal Stream: The Estero de Paco Experience,” Arlen A. Ancheta; “A Prolonged Death: Intramuros during the American Colonial Period, 1898-1941,” Michael D. Pante; and “Decadent Desire and Darkness: Mapping Gay Manila in Ishmael Bernal’s ‘City After Dark,’” Ferdinand M. Lopez.
There will also be a film presentation and lecture, “American Influences on Philippine Cinema,” by Nick Deocampo of the Center for New Cinema.
The conference sharing fee is P2,500.
