‘Torture cop’ bid for bail blocked

MANILA, Philippines – Government lawyers blocked the move of a policeman facing torture case to post bail for his temporary liberty.

Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Philip Kimpo said Margie Catalan-Evangelista, the wife of the victim Darius Evangelista, appeared before the Manila Regional Trial Court and testified against Senior Inspector Joselito Binayug. The victim, Evangelista disappeared on March 5, 2010.

Binayug is facing a case for violation of the Anti-Torture Act.

Kimpo said on the next hearing, they intend to show to the court the video footage of Binayug allegedly torturing Evangelista.

Binayug and several other policemen were relieved after television news showed cell phone footage of a naked and bound man grimacing in pain on the floor allegedly at the precinct station on Asuncion Street in Tondo, Manila.
