Polls on Pag-asa island peaceful so far, says military

MANILA, Philippines — Polls have been so far peaceful on the tiny island of Pag-asa in Palawan, part of the disputed Spratly Islands in the West Philippine Sea.

“As of 1p.m. Monday, 210 out of 288 registered voters in Pag-asa Island, Palawan have already exercised their sacred right to vote,” a report from the Philippine military’s Western Command (Wescom) said.

The elections started at 7a.m. and have remained peaceful as of latest, the report added.

The provincial Commission on Elections earlier announced that the voting on Pag-asa island is expected to finish earlier than the rest of Palawan.

Meanwhile, Wescom together with the Philippine National Police continue to provide security in the area, the report also said.
