Cavite candidate’s kin survives ambush

MANILA, Philippines– A nephew of the Liberal Party candidate for vice mayor of Bacoor City, Cavite,  survived an ambush by a group of unidentified men early  Tuesday, police said.

Chief Superintendent Benito Estipona, Calabarzon police director, said Ferdinand Malvar, 48 was wounded when he was waylaid by seven gunmen onboard several motorcycles.

Ferdinand was driving his car towards Zapote when the suspects allegedly blocked his way and opened fire in Barangay (village) Aniban 2 in Bacoor, Cavite around 1:45 a.m.

The victim sustained a gunshot wound to his left abdomen.  The victim was taken by residents to the Imus Medical Center in the adjacent city of Imus.
Malvar has been declared “out of danger,” according to Bacoor City police chief Superintendent Ronaldo Mendoza.

The victim is a nephew of Edwin Malvar, who is running against former a former head of the Association of Barangay Captains, Karen Sarino, of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats.  Sarino is the  running mate of re-electionist Bacoor City Mayor Strike Revilla.

Two weeks ago, three Revilla supporters were ambushed by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Barangay Queen’s Row West. Two were killed while the third victim, village captain Catherine Palabrica, was wounded.The police have yet to solve this case.

Mendoza said he could not say yet whether the two incidents were related as an investigation was still ongoing.
