10 killed, scores injured as trailer truck rams bus

Ten persons were killed while at least 20 others were injured when a trailer truck rammed a bus yesterday in barangay Uling, Naga City, southern Cebu.

The accident happened at 4:45 p.m.

P02 Cristino Canono, investigator of the Naga City police, said a woman and five men died on the spot.

Another victim later died at the Carmen Copper Corporation Hospital in Don Andres Soriano, Toledo City where some of the victims were brought after the accident.

Nonoy Mongaya, information officer of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City, said 34 wounded passengers were taken to the hospital and two of them were declared dead on arrival.

Two other victims died at the hospital’s trauma center, he said.

Canono identified one of the fatalities as Antonito Omagay, of F. Llamas Street., barangay Punta Princesa, Cebu City, who was the driver of the trailer prime mover with plate number GUF 405.

The trailer truck was carrying a bulldozer and came from Toledo City. It was bound for Cebu City.

The BT Trans bus with plate number GWH-253 was heading for Toledo City.

PO2 Cristino Canono of Naga police said the bus is owned by Calvo Bus Liner.

Based on the initial investigation, Canono said, the trailer truck was running downhill in a curved road when its brake malfunctioned and rammed the bus.

After plowing the bus toward the side of the road, the trailer rammed into a mango tree, pinning Omagay to death.
