Let’s remember God’s love this Christmas – Aquino

MANILA, Philippines — Amid the holiday rush, Filipinos should pause to reflect on the Christmas narratives, President Benigno Aquino III said in his Christmas message given out on Sunday.

The President acknowledged that the Filipinos have always been known for their longest celebration of Christmas, but then again the true spirit could not be “boxed in’’ gifts, festive get-togethers and colorful holiday trimmings.

“In the middle of the celebrations, let’s not forget the narratives that revolve around Christmas: the Almighty Father’s sacrifice of his only son to ransom mankind from sin. Part of the moral of Christmas, too, is the openness of a stranger who opened his doors to Joseph and Mary so they could spend the night in a barn; that there were three kings who traveled far and wide to deliver their presents to the holy infant,’’  Aquino said.

But most of all, he added: “This occasion is a sign of God’s love for all of us.’’

In his holiday message, the President also expressed gratitude to the Filipino who did their share in building a culture of truthfulness and concern for others.

“Because of the dogged determination you’ve shown in the road to the right path, the Filipino Christmas has become more meaningful,’’ he said.

Aquino paid tribute to the Filipinos for the government’s key accomplishments in the “sitio” (settlement) electrification program that brought power to thousands of families in the countryside; and the conditional cash transfer that aided families to a healthy and progressive future.

“Turning our back on negativism in favor of an optimistic view of the government or the society in general, you did this. Nothing has changed: you are the strength of the government. It’s clear: every grain that we reap comes from the country’s struggle. You, our bosses, did this,’’ he said.

“All this reflects the true spirit of Christmas: charity, humility and love for others,’’ he said. “We have shown to the world that Filipino Christmas is unique because of the readiness of each one of us to bring light to our countrymen, not only this Christmas, but every day that we tread the right path.’’
