‘Smoking’ vintage bomb detonated

THREE vintage bombs recovered from different junk shops in Mandaue City were detonated in barangay Gaas, Balamban town, Cebu.

Insp. Diosdado Malazarte, chief of Mandaue Police Special Weapons and Tactics, said the three bombs were immediately disposed of yesterday morning after one of the explosives showed signs of instability.

Each bomb weighed one kilo and measures one-foot.

One of the bombs emitted smoke. It was immediately soaked in a pail of water to prevent it from exploding, Malazarte said.

Two of the bombs were recovered last Aug. 11 at Gabato junk shop in sitio Mahayahay, barangay Subangdaku. The other bomb was recovered from Art Trade Inc. in MWFC compound in barangay Opao on Wednesday afternoon.

The explosives were sold together with scrap metal.

Malazarte said the junk shop owners were not aware that old bombs were together with the scrap materials./CORRESPONDENTS FE MARIE D. DUMABOC AND JUCELL MARIE P. CUYOS
