Cebu City Niños haul 20 gold medals in first day of CVIRAA action in Dumaguete

Dumaguete City—The Cebu city Niños took off to a sizzling start in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association after hauling 20 gold medals yesterday here in the “city of gentle people.”

The Niños made a living from their bets in swimming, athletics and gymnastics in both the elementary and secondary divisions.

The secondary division won 11 gold medals, 10 silvers and three bronze medals while the elementary squad bagged nine gold medals, three silvers and two bronze medals.

The swimmers of coach Rolando Alvarez of the Cebu Blue Marlins and University of Cebu (UC) were responsible for Cebu City’s domination at the pool. Karen Mae Indaya and Michael Ichiro Kong led the medal haul with four and three gold medals, respectively.

FIRST GOLD

In the track and field events  at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center, Shantel Tanucan of University of Cebu (UC) captured the first gold medal of the meet after she dominated the shot put event. Bera Rose Saragera of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) followed suit  after placing  first in the long jump event.

Christian Cabillon of Labangon Elementary School topped the boys 110m hurdles while Sam Moses Estrada topped the shot put event also in the elementary division.

Meanwhile, booters of the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) had an impressive day one performance after blanking Cebu Province, 9-0, and Lapu-Lapu City, 9-0, in the elementary and secondary divisions, respectively, at the Siliman University Football Field

In volleyball, the Southwestern University (SWU) lady cobras edged Toledo, 25-15, 25-16, in the morning and routed Negros Oriental Province, 25-5, 25-11, in the afternoon at the covered court of the municipality of Valencia.

The basketball secondary team will begin its campaign today while Cebu City’s girls team  already played yesterday and won over Talisay City, 52-38, at the covered court of the Siliman University. The Niños’ softball team, meanwhile,  started with a default win against Lapu-Lapu City.
