Teens with hemophilia seek help

RENATO

Edilina Llamas leaves to God the fate of her two teenage boys who have hemophilia, a congenital bleeding problem, which is a rare form of illness.

Rustom, 16, and Renato, 15, were first diagnosed as people with hemophilia (PWH) when they were just a year old. Both suffer frequently from nose bleeding and, at times, there is blood in their urine.

Their ailment has prevented them from going to school because every time they were enrolled in the first grade, they were forced to drop out in the middle of the year due to their condition.

“They were telling me they wish they were well enough to be able to continue schooling even if they think they are quite old to be in the elementary grade,” Edilina said.

RUSTOM

She said her sons both need to be injected six times a month with Factor VIII to prevent them from bleeding. Each vial, however, costs P5,800, a princely sum for a laundry woman.
