Sporting events cap off Press Freedom Week

Cebu Daily News bets shine in fun run, bio challenge

The 2012 Cebu Press Freedom Week came to a close yesterday with three sporting events and a fellowship party for Cebu’s media workers.

First off yesterday was the Press Freedom Run at the Cebu Business Park sponsored by Coca-Cola and Cebu Holdings Inc.

Cebu Daily News runners managed podium finishes in the fun run, which had 3-kilometer and 5k categories.

CDN’s Corra Mae Aliste (19:42) won the 3k women’s division while Gabby Lariosa (13:46) settled for second place in the men’s 3k category. Connie Fernandez (31:01), meanwhile, finished third in the women’s 5k category while Ronald Tomaquin (22:55) wound up third in the men’s 5k race.  It was the second straight year that Aliste won the women’s 3k crown.

FEATURED STORIES

Topping the men’s 5k run for the second straight year also was ABS-CBN’s Bayani Alvarez.

The 100-kilometer ultra marathon finisher Alvarez breasted the finish line in front the City Sports Club-Cebu in 20 minutes and 38 seconds.

Also winning back-toback titles was Hanz Llerin of Sun.Star Cebu, who dominated the 5k women’s side in 29 minutes and 42 seconds.

Jurlito Montecillo finished second in the men’s 5k while Armie Gardie settled for second in the women’s 5k race.

Topping the men’s 3k was Juvey Veloso of Sun.Star with a time of 13:39. Julius Panerio finished third.  Emerald Quiapo and Laureen Mondodendo were second and third in the women’s 3k.

Cebu Daily News also placed third in the bio challenge sponsored by Cebu Holdings Inc.

The team, composed of Calvin Cordova, Marian Codilla, Jessa Agua, Joy Quito and Peter Romanillos, had 113 points in the eco-themed adventure race held at the Cebu Business Park.

GMA took the top spot with 123 points while The Freeman finished second with 122.

BASKETBALL

The Defense PNP Press Corps (DEPP) completed a grandslam after hacking out an 87-81 win over the City Hall Association of Reporters and Media (CHARM) in the championship game of the Press Freedom Cup basketball tournament at the Cebu Eastern College Gymnasium.

The Courts Beat, on the other hand, beat the Sports Correspondents and Reporters (SCORE), 88-82, to bag the third place.
