CHR prober ambushed after spat with trike driver
A Commission on Human Rights investigator on his way home survived an ambush by a lone gunman Thursday night in Quezon City.
Simplicio Abong, 55, was driving his car when he was allegedly ambushed by Jerwin Escalante, 24, a tricycle driver, at the corner of Sto. Domingo and Mauban Streets at around 6:30 p.m. Abong was about to make a turn when Escalante fired shots at the passing vehicle, hitting the victim in different parts of the body.
The victim is now confined at the Sta. Teresita General Hospital. Escalante was later arrested in a follow-up operation. Abong’s wife Nonita told the police that her husband and Escalante had filed oral defamation charges against each other earlier following an argument over a neighbor. Jimena said Escalante had undergone a paraffin test to determine if he is the gunman.
