Makati fires: ‘One for breakfast, one for lunch’

“WE TOOK one for breakfast and the other for lunch,” Makati City fire marshal Ricardo Perdigon said as he tried to make light of the two fires that kept his men busy on Friday.

The first blaze razed 14 houses on a hilltop on C-5 Road near Kalayaan Avenue, Barangay East Rembo, while the other hit a four-story apartment in Barangay Valenzuela. The C-5 fire started at 7:37 a.m. and required firefighters to climb a hill before putting the situation under control 45 minutes later. A resident suffered minor burns while another fainted at the sight of the burning neighborhood, Perdigon said.

Later at 1:14 p.m., another fire started on the fourth floor of an apartment owned by Corazon Pineda at the corner of Nicanor Garcia and Concepcion Streets, Barangay Valenzuela. No one was hurt in the second fire that lasted just over 10 minutes.
