Binay’s driver arrested for hit-and-run accident

A driver of Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay Jr. was arrested Thursday morning after he hit with his van a teenager and his father who were crossing at the corner of Osmeña Highway and San Andres Street in San Andres Bukid, Manila. Rolando Danao was taking his 14-year-old son, Joshua, to school around 6 a.m. when they were hit by the Mitsubishi Adventure being driven by Eduardo Herrera Jr. The boy died on the spot after he went under the van and was dragged for at least 50 meters while his father suffered a leg injury. Both the victims were using the pedestrian lane when the accident occurred. Herrera, meanwhile, sped away and tried to escape but was caught after PO1 Rafael Boco, a motorcycle-riding operative of the Manila Police District Traffic Enforcement Unit (MPD-TEU), gave chase. When arrested, Herrera yielded a licensed cal..45 pistol and was brought to the MPD-TEU office for investigation, said PO3 Marco Saunar. Vice President Jejomar Binay’s spokesperson Joey Salgado confirmed that Herrera is an employee of the younger Binay. He said that Herrera was off-duty at the time of the accident although he “would have to face the charges [against him].” Mayor Binay, according to Salgado, has promised to help the victims’ family.
