MANILA, Philippines—The Haribon Foundation is inviting all participants of the November 2011 Million Hectare Challenge as well as volunteers to plant seedlings in Baras, Rizal, on June 16.
The planting activity is part of activities to celebrate Haribon’s 40th year of leading biodiversity conservation in the Philippines which will culminate in a grand Million Hectare Runners’ Challenge on Nov. 25.
Haribon has been leading efforts to restore and revitalize depleted forests through its aggressive tree-planting activities dubbed “rainforestation.” (Volunteers may e-mail volunteer@haribon.org.ph.)
With a minimal donation of P200, one can adopt a seedling of any Philippine native tree species like narra, dao, kamagong, makaasim, and lauan. Adopted seedlings are planted by Haribon members, volunteers, staff and partner communities in watersheds where the cutting of trees is prohibited. Haribon will take care of the adopted tree for three years.
The donated amount covers a seedling, land preparation for planting, and maintenance.
Haribon is encouraging students and the youth to start growing trees through a Nurture Card. For P50 per card, a seedling that has been previously planted under the Adopt-a-Seedling Program will be nurtured in your name for one year, and you can continue to care for that tree with a yearly donation of P50 per seedling per year. Proceeds from the sale of these cards will go to maintaining 60,000 trees planted last year for the next two years.
