CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela — The Department of Education in Isabela and the local government in this city on Thursday suspended classes for elementary and secondary students after the heat index soared to 41 degrees Celsius, a dangerous level according to the Department of Science and Technology—Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-Pagasa).
Isabela Schools Division Superintendent Rachel Llana directed school heads to coordinate with village officials, local workers, and police officers to ensure smooth and safe dismissal of students.
Meanwhile, Ilagan City Mayor Josemarie Diaz issued an executive order suspending classes to safeguard public health, stressing the mayor’s authority to suspend classes and school activities during disasters and emergencies, including extreme heat conditions.
Students who had already arrived at school in the morning were sent home under the supervision of their parents or guardians.
“We are following these directives to prioritize the health and well-being of our students,” said Joy Diquiatco, Ilagan’s education program supervisor. INQ
