Jesus Nazareno devotees witness ‘Dungaw’ in Traslacion 2025
MANILA, Philippines — With hands raised in prayer and voices echoing devotion, thousands of devotees gathered at the Minor Basilica of San Sebastian on Thursday to witness the traditional “Dungaw,” a solemn moment featuring the images of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel de San Sebastian and Jesus Nazareno.
The andas, or carriage, carrying the ebony statue of Jesus Nazareno arrived at the basilica around 5:45 p.m., greeted by cheers and shouts of “Viva Nazareno” from the crowd.
Meanwhile, the image of Nuestra Señora del Carmen de San Sebastian appeared from the church’s red and yellow balcony, creating a symbolic scene of reverence and unity.

After the moment of reflection, devotees recited the Lord’s Prayer, continuing a tradition observed since the Dungaw’s revival in 2014 during the Traslacion

The San Sebastian Basilica Foundation clarified that, contrary to popular belief, the Dungaw is not a reenactment of Mary and Jesus’s biblical meeting on the way to Calvary.
Rather, it symbolizes a gesture of respect and religious courtesy between the King and Queen of Quiapo.

The image of the Jesus Nazareno began its procession from Quirino Grandstand at 4:41 a.m. on Thursday, drawing a sea of devotees who joined in prayer and song throughout its journey.
