MANILA, Philippines — Despite stern warnings from the Hijos of Nazareno to refrain from climbing the andas during the Traslacion, some devotees seized the opportunity to get closer to the image of Jesus Nazareno.

With towels in hand, they swam through the sea of people as the Traslacion passed Vergara Street.

As the crowd left no space for others to stand on the ground, some stepped on other devotees as they successfully climbed the andas.

The devotees were seen hugging and clinging to the cross of Jesus Nazareno.

The Traslacion, which began around 4:41 a.m. Thursday, was expected to be attended by millions of faithful.

The procession is a retracing of the origins of Jesus Nazareno from Bagumbayan to Intramuros, and then to Quiapo.
