MANILA, Philippines — First lady Liza Araneta-Marcos on Friday thanked “loyalists” and “real friends” who she said had stood by her husband during “difficult times,” in a rare statement that revealed a period of emotional distress for the first family.

She did not elaborate as to what exactly elicited such gratitude, but the statement came less than a month after Vice President Sara Duterte, in a profanity-laced online press conference, issued a death threat against the Marcoses and Speaker Martin Romualdez.

Araneta-Marcos took to Instagram to express her appreciation for the Marcos family’s longtime supporters.

“They say you’ll only know who your real friends are when life knocks you down. For all the LOYALISTS who stood by my husband when he was at his lowest, my sons and I will forever be grateful,” she said.

“Your kindness, love and unwavering support gave us strength when we needed it most. From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for being our light during those difficult times. Mabuhay kayong lahat!”

She also shared photos of herself and Marcos mingling with supporters and employees of the Office of the President at the Malacañang grounds on Dec. 16, when the Palace kept the Christmas tradition of opening its gates to the public for a day.
