The postponement of impeachment hearings set for two trial days—Friday and next Monday—has riled Internet bloggers and Inquirer.net readers who are eager to see Chief Justice Renato Corona taking the stand to defend his integrity.
Restive citizens of the virtual world complained of the additional five days within which the defense could prepare Corona for his much-awaited appearance at his own trial on Tuesday. Asked about this, lead prosecutor Niel Tupas Jr. observed the penchant of the defense for asking postponement of impeachment hearings.
“We’ve been very liberal to the defense. After the six-week break and two days after trial resumed on May 7, they moved for the continuance (or postponement) of the trial for 48 hours (which later became 72 hours),” Tupas said.
He said the prosecution did not object to this because “perhaps, we want the proceedings to move by giving them a chance and enough leeway and latitude, both by the Senate and prosecution.”
However, one Inquirer.net reader was bold enough to draft a memo for the prosecution. “This is the end game, so please choose your prosecutors to grill Corona very well. At least two congressmen should not grill Corona, lest you lose the golden opportunity,” a certain “Noel” uploaded this post to the comments’ section of INQUIRER.net.
