MANILA, Philippines—Overcast skies and heavy rains are likely in Metro Manila and its adjacent areas on Monday, according to the state weather bureau.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued a thunderstorm watch at 10:00 a.m.

“Thunderstorm is MORE LIKELY to develop over Greater Metro Manila Area (Metro Manila, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, and Cavite) within 12 hours,” Pagasa said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

In its earlier advisory, Pagasa said Metro Manila, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, and Cavite will experience “mostly cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms.”

This condition is due to the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” which remains the dominant weather system in the country.

Pagasa officially declared the start of the rainy season last May 29.
