DBM OKs release of over P5.8 billion fund for new classrooms

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) on Thursday said it has already approved the release of over P5.8 billion for the construction of 1,834 new classrooms nationwide.

According to the DBM, Budget Secretary Mina Pangandaman approved the P5.830 Special Allotment Release Order (SARO) for the joint request of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Department of Education (DepEd) on March 18.

The amount marks the first batch of DepEd’s Basic Education Facilities (BEF) Fund.

“The timely release of funds for the project signifies our dedication and commitment to help in building a brighter future for our young learners,” said Pangandaman.

The BEF is set to be used for the improvement and maintenance of school facilities such as classroom and workshop buildings, replacement of old dilapidated buildings, provision of furniture, repair and rehabilitation of classrooms including water and sanitation facilities, and electrification.

Part of the funds will also be used for the construction, replacement, and completion of kindergarten, elementary, and secondary school buildings, as well as technical vocational laboratories.

It would also include upgrading and installing disability access facilities, ensuring compliance with DPWH’s accessible and universal design principles.
