Pagasa forecasts 46°C heat index in La Union two days in a row

MANILA, Philippines — The heat index in Bacnotan, La Union, is forecast to soar to the “danger” category on Friday and Saturday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) warned.

Based on the state weather bureau’s heat index forecast as of 5 p.m. last Thursday, the heat index in Bacnotan may reach a scorching 46 degrees Celsius for two days.

This temperature falls under the “danger” category of heat indexes ranging from 42 to 51 degrees Celsius.

No other areas in the country were predicted to fall under the said category during the same period.

Notably, Bacnotan also logged 46 degrees Celsius last Thursday, while its heat index reached 42 degrees Celsius and 47 degrees Celsius last Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

According to Pagasa, people in areas under the danger category in heat indexes are likely to experience heat cramps and exhaustion.

Continued exposure to such temperatures could also result in heatstroke, it added.
