DSWD warns vs fake social media offers

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Sunday called on the company behind Facebook to help them take down bogus pages that were “spreading fake news” or fake offerings to beneficiaries.

Romel Lopez, spokesperson for the DSWD, also debunked circulating posts on social media—one which supposedly offers a job of data encoder in the agency with a P800 salary per day posted on Facebook, and one supposedly giving P12,000 cash aid to senior citizens from a video clip on YouTube.

The Facebook page “DS WD” posted the job offer, and Lopez said this was a “fake” page of the agency. “That is not the official Facebook page of the DSWD,” he said in a video statement.

Another post that he branded as “fake news” was the “clickbait” video clip on YouTube that supposedly offers P12,000 worth of cash assistance to senior citizens monthly.

The DSWD page itself debunked this supposed “offer,” denying there was no program that offered P12,000 worth of cash aid to qualified seniors.

However, the agency explained that the DSWD has programs that senior citizens can avail such as assistance coming from the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation and the social pension for indigent seniors.—DEMPSEY REYES
