Another fire displaces 68 persons in Cabuyao City

2 dead, 10 injured in firecracker factory blast in Cabuyao, Laguna

LUCENA CITY — Another fire broke out on Friday, Feb. 9, in Cabuyao City in Laguna province, displacing 68 persons, police said.

In a report on Saturday, the Region 4A police said the blaze, which started at 3:10 p.m. in Barangay Bigaa, razed five houses made of light materials.

No casualties or serious injuries were reported, barangay officials said.

On Feb. 1, a firecracker factory exploded and caught fire in the same barangay leaving five persons dead. Investigators were looking into the mishandling of firecrackers as the possible cause of the explosion.

Mayor Dennis Hain ordered on Feb. 2 the suspension of all fireworks manufacturing operations in the city “for 30 days without prejudice to subsequent extensions in case of necessity.”

During the suspension period, Hain tasked the police, firemen, barangay officials and other concerned local government offices to conduct inspections and investigations of the fireworks factories to ensure compliance with government regulations.

The order did not specify the number of firecracker factories in the locality to be affected by the suspension.
