In a statement released by the Presidential Communications Office on Tuesday, Marcos said that learning how to be aware of energy consumption is important as the country moves towards sustainable development.

“As we pursue the path of sustainable development, it is important that we develop a keen awareness of our energy consumption,” Marcos said.

“Thus, this month-long event serves as a reminder for us to reflect on our energy habits and foster a culture of responsible energy use,” he added.

The Department of Energy (DOE) is also marking its 51st anniversary this month.

Under the NECM, the government gives out an Energy Efficiency Award to people and companies who have shown a strong dedication to energy conservation.

According to Marcos, the awardees set a standard in terms of responsible energy use which others should follow, since sustainable practices go hand-in-hand with progress.

“I hope that with their example we can inspire the rest of the country to become more conscious in utilizing our energy supply more responsibly,” the President said.

“With everyone’s help, we can build a more sustainable and resilient future for us and for the generations that will follow,” he added.

Aside from the award, there are different activities during the NECM which are “geared toward finding sound energy solutions, creating sustainable practices, and embracing emerging energy technologies and applications”.

The 2023 NECM has the theme “Sustainable and Responsible Energy Future: Fueling Hope, Lighting the Way”, which seeks to start discussions on how people can use energy efficiently, while encouraging support for the government’s energy action plan.
