BARMM lawmakers file bill for teachers’ continuing educ program

MANILA, Philippines — Two members of Parliament of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) filed on Tuesday a bill seeking to establish a continuing education program for teachers.
Members of Parliament Amir Mawallil and Rasol Mitmug Jr. filed the proposed Bangsamoro Teachers’ Continuing Education Act of 2023.
In a statement, Mawallil said the measure aims to ensure that Bangsamoro teachers will be able to keep pace with the progressing field of education.

The lawmaker also hopes to enable teachers gain access to opportunities that will refresh their knowledge.
The office said the bill will enable educators in BARMM’s public school system to keep up with national and international trends and standards on teaching.
Under the bill, the teachers will be required to have at least 18 hours of continuing education every three years.
“Education is an important pillar of a prosperous and progressive nation,” Mawallil said in a press release.
“And what better way to gauge the quality of education than to test the mettle of its most important asset: our teachers,” he added.
For his part, Mitmug said the bill will allow teachers to learn new innovations.

The proposal will also improve their skills when it comes to techniques and practices they can use in their teaching profession.
“Continuing education also upskills educators, which they can use to apply for promotions at work,” he said.
“This opens them to a world of opportunities for career growth and advancement, which very much impacts their livelihood and quality of life,” he added.
