MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Jenny (international name: Koinu) will still enhance the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, which will bring windy and rainy weather conditions in Central and Southern Luzon, as well as Visayas, on Thursday.

This was the day’s forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), which also reported that Jenny may leave the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) by Thursday afternoon or evening.

“Patuloy po niyang [Jenny] pinapalakas ang hanging habagat o southwest monsoon kung saan ito ay nakaaapekto sa Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, at Visayas,” Pagasa weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said.

(It [Jenny] continues to strengthen the southwest monsoon, which affects Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and the Visayas.)

The state weather bureau said areas in Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, and the northern portion of Palawan, including Calamian, Cuyo, and Kalayaan Islands may expect moderate to heavy rains on Thursday evening because of the typhoon-boosted southwest monsoon.

Pangasinan may experience rough weather conditions also due to the typhoon-enhanced southwest monsoon from Friday evening through Saturday evening, Pagasa added.

As of early Thursday, Aurelio said Jenny’s intensification continues as it moves closer to the southern portion of Taiwan. Jenny was last located 140 kilometers north-northwest of Itbayat, Batanes.

“Sa kasalukuyan ay lumakas pa ang bagyong ito. Ngayon, ang lakas ng hangin malapit sa gitna ng bagyo ay nasa 175 kilometers per hour (kph) at ang pagbugso ay umaabot sa 215 kph,” he said.

(Currently this typhoon is getting stronger. As of now, winds near the center of the storm are at 175 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts are reaching 215 kph.)

“Maaari pong ngayong umaga ay tatatama o maglalandfall itong mata o sentro ng bagyo sa southern portion ng Taiwan at inaasahan po natin mamayang hapon o gabi ay lalabas na ng PAR ang bagyo,” he furthered.

(It is possible that this morning, the eye or center of the typhoon will hit or make landfall in the southern portion of Taiwan and we expect the typhoon to emerge from PAR this afternoon or evening.)

Pagasa likewise kept Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 3 over Batanes and TCWS No. 2 over the northern portion of Babuyan Islands.

It also maintained TCWS No. 1 over the following areas:

  • The rest of Babuyan Islands
  • Northern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gonzaga, Buguey, Santa Teresita, Lal-Lo, Camalaniugan, Pamplona, Claveria, Aparri, Ballesteros, Abulug, Allacapan, Sanchez-Mira, Santa Praxedes, Lasam, Gattaran)
  • Northern portion of Apayao (Calanasan, Pudtol, Luna, Santa Marcela, Flora)
  • Northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Piddig, Bangui, Vintar, Burgos, Pagudpud, Bacarra, Adams, Pasuquin, Carasi, Dumalneg, Laoag City)

“Patuloy pa rin tayong mag-ingat at alamin ang ligtas na lugar [upang maging ligtas] sa malalakas na pag-ulan at hangin na dulot ng bagyo lalo na sa may bandang Batanes dahil malapit ang gitna ng bagyo rito,” he said.

(Let’s continue to be careful and know the safe place [to be safe] from the heavy rains and winds caused by the typhoon especially around Batanes because the center of the typhoon is close here.)

Similarly, Pagasa said gale warnings are still hoisted over the seaboards of Batanes, Cagayan, including Babuyan Islands, Isabela, and Ilocos Norte.
