Tropical Depression Jenny not directly affecting PH, but to enhance habagat

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression (TD) Jenny will not directly affect the country but will intensify the southwest monsoon, or habagat, the state weather bureau said on Friday.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), the tropical cyclone moving westward bears maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of 55 kph.

The tropical depression may intensify into a tropical storm by Saturday afternoon and develop into a typhoon by Wednesday next week.

No tropical cyclone wind signals have been raised, but the weather agency said that it may do so on Sunday or if forecast scenarios change, when the typhoon is expected to strengthen the southwest monsoon, bringing heavy rainfall in parts of northern Luzon, such as Batanes, as well as in central and southern Luzon.

“Considering the proximity of the tropical cyclone to land from the forecast track may result in heavy rainfall over Batanes and Babuyan Islands in the next five days. The Southwest Monsoon may be enhanced by this tropical cyclone beginning on Sunday, resulting in possible occasional rains over the western portions of Central and Southern Luzon,” it said in a bulletin.

Jenny may also make landfall over Batanes, the Babuyan islands, or in Cagayan, Pagasa said.

TD Jenny intensified at 2:00 pm Friday from a low-pressure area, according to the Pagasa.
