MANILA, Philippines — Martial Law saved Philippines from becoming a communist country.
Senator Robin Padilla expressed on Tuesday his views during the joint hearing of Senate committee on national defense and security, peace, unification and reconciliation with committees on foreign relations, public works, and finance.
”In this world, we need to hear two narratives. If we have heard one narrative, that’s okay. But let us not suppress the other narrative,” said Padilla, who was talking in Filipino.
“The other narrative is that martial law saved our country from becoming a communist country,” he claimed.
The senator repeatedly clarified he was not debunking “other narratives” pertaining to the ill effects of Martial Law.
But he also insisted the regime supposedly benefited the country.
Padilla lamented how September 21, the day Martial Law was declared, was given a “bad image for a long time.”

In order to change this notion, Padilla wants September 21 of every year to be declared as ‘Unsung Heroes Day.’
In July last year, he had filed Senate Bill Number 452 for this purpose.
“We have soldiers who gave their lives to save our nation from being surrounded by communists,” the lawmaker said.
“We will not enjoy all of these, if not for them. We are enjoying this freedom because of the sacrifices made by our soldiers,” he added.
