NDRRMC: 500K people now affected by Hanna, Goring, southwest monsoon

MANILA, Philippines — More people are now affected by typhoons Hanna (international name: Haikui) and Goring (international name: Saola), as well as the enhanced southwest monsoon, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The NDRRMC said 514, 153 individuals or 140,101 families located in 1,756 barangays nationwide are now being affected by the weather events – higher than the 418,192 individuals or 114,724 families in 1,469 barangays it reported on Sunday, September 3.

In its 8 a.m. bulletin, the agency said the total number of affected people included the displaced 13,303 – of which 3,251 stayed in evacuation centers while 10,052 took shelter elsewhere or outside evacuation centers.

The evacuation centers were located in Regions 1 (Ilocos), 3 (Central Luzon), and 6 (Western Visayas); Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon); and Mimaropa (Mindoro Oriental and Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan).

The NDRRMC also said it still validating reports that two people died from typhoons. It likewise noted receiving reports that one person was injured while another was missing.

It further reported that more than P33 million of assistance from various local government units and the Department of Social Welfare and Development were distributed to affected families.
